HIFU vs Ultherapy: What Is the Difference?
How HIFU and Ultherapy compare, how long results last, who they suit and what a HIFU session at our Houston spa is like.

If you want firmer skin on your face or neck without surgery, you have probably seen both terms and wondered about HIFU vs Ultherapy. They are closely related, and the difference is more about device and imaging than about the basic science. Here is a clear comparison so you can decide what fits you.
How focused ultrasound tightens skin
Both treatments send focused ultrasound energy below the surface of the skin. At the focal point the tissue heats briefly, which tightens existing collagen and signals your body to build new collagen over the following weeks. The surface of the skin is left intact, so there is no wound to heal.
HIFU vs Ultherapy: the key differences
What it is. HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, is the general category of devices. Ultherapy is one specific branded device in that family.
Imaging. Ultherapy includes real-time ultrasound imaging so the provider can see the skin layers while treating. Most HIFU devices do not, so they rely on preset depths and the provider’s training.
Clearance. Ultherapy has FDA clearance to lift the brow, chin and neck and to improve lines on the chest (source). Other HIFU devices vary.
Price. Branded Ultherapy is usually priced higher than HIFU at most spas and clinics.
How long does HIFU last?
For both, results appear gradually. Most people see the best change around 2 to 3 months after treatment, and results are often described as lasting roughly 6 to 18 months. Aging continues, so many people repeat a session about once a year. Daily sunscreen helps protect your results.
Who is a good candidate?
- Mild to moderate laxity on the jawline, jowls, neck or brows.
- People who want a natural lift without surgery or downtime.
- Not the best choice for very loose skin, where a surgeon may be the better first stop.
What a HIFU facial is like at our spa
At Silueta Med Spa we offer HIFU for the face, the neck, or face and neck together. We cleanse your skin, map the areas, then glide the applicator across the skin as it delivers pulses. You will feel warmth or tingling, and you can return to your day right after. See prices on our HIFU skin tightening page.
Pairing HIFU with other treatments
HIFU works on firmness. For texture, pores or acne marks, add microneedling. For glow and hydration between sessions, book a facial.
When to ask a doctor
If you have an implant, active skin infection, open wounds or a medical condition affecting healing, ask your doctor before any energy-based treatment. Questions about which option suits you? Call (281) 497-0888.
